Neal Paschal, a civil engineering student from Columbia, South Carolina, has been named a 2017 Traffic Safety Scholar.

With the recognition, Paschal has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship to attend the 35th annual National Lifesavers Conference on Highway Safety Priorities in Charlotte, North Carolina, from March 25-28. He is one of 38 students from the United States and Canada who were selected through an application process.

Paschal is currently working on his master’s degree in civil engineering at The University of Alabama. He received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from UA in 2016.

The scholarship recipients will be honored during a pre-conference reception in Charlotte on March 24. The students will then have the opportunity to attend more than 80 different workshops during the conference led by experts on distracted and impaired driving, adult occupant protection, vehicle technology, law enforcement, commercial vehicles, roadway design and more.

The Traffic Safety Scholar Program is in its second year. The mission of the program is to give undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to attend the conference and show them career opportunities in the traffic safety field that are available to them through several different disciplines.

The conference is the premier assembly of traffic safety professionals in the United States and explores the latest research and evidence-based strategies for approaching the nation’s top traffic safety problems.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
