Emeritus engineering professor receives inaugural society honor

By Alana Norris

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Garry Warren, metallurgical and materials engineering emeritus professor, was recently chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Julia and Johannes Weertman Educator Award by The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.

The award recognizes excellence in metallurgical and materials engineering education.

“I am very humbled with this recognition from my peers at TMS,” Warren said. “I am especially happy and grateful that it is for doing something that I loved, being an educator.”

Warren was nominated by UA College of Engineering associate dean Viola Acoff.

“I have had the privilege of working with Garry for over 20 years, and I have personally witnessed his dedication to educating our students,” Acoff said. “Although Dr. Warren is retired, he teaches the corrosion course every spring semester, which is always enrolled to capacity.”

The award will be presented to him March 14 at the TMS-AIME Awards Ceremony during the 147th TMS Annual Meeting. Warren will receive a complementary ticket to the dinner, registration for the meeting and a travel stipend.

While a professor at the University of Alabama, Warren also worked in the Center for Materials for Information Technology. His research interests include amime-quinone polymers and  electrochemical and corrosion research involving recording media and permanent magnets.

Warren earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Texas at El Paso and a doctorate in metallurgy from the University of Utah.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
