Tornado psychology after April 27, 2011: Persuading people to act

By Associated Engineering Press

It’s the stuff nightmares are made of. You’re driving. There’s a tornado right behind you. It’s big, it’s powerful, and it’s gaining on you. You can’t outrun it. There’s nowhere to go. What do you do?

The experts say there’s no safe option, but the best one is to leave your car and get as low to the ground as possible, such as in a ditch. But can you make yourself do it? That’s the question — and science is attempting to solve it.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
