QM coin, regimental crest travel aboard balloon on high-altitude test launch

By Associated Engineering Press

The Quartermaster coin and insignia have boldly gone where few, if any, Army organizational identifiers have gone before. On Saturday, a travel and photography first was achieved thanks to a University of Alabama student initiative – Project Firefly.

During a high-altitude prototype flight from the Tuscaloosa campus, a QM Distinctive Unit Insignia and the QM General’s Coin of Excellence were lifted 94,000-feet into the stratosphere on a balloon platform. A GoPro camera captured photographs during the successful trip.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
