Rocketry Challenge teaches science to middle schoolers

James McDanal waited patiently in line Friday afternoon, ready to launch “The Captain” across the sky.

“The Captain,” a water-propelled plastic rocket James had made in honor of Captain America, was wrapped in red, white and blue tape with sharp fins as James prepared to launch it during the third annual Tuscaloosa Rocketry Challenge at the Recreation Fields of the University of Alabama. In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
