University of Alabama grad, former Redstone Arsenal flight surgeon among NASA’s 12 new astronauts

Bob Hines and Dr. Frank Rubio are among the five women and seven men tapped for this year’s NASA astronaut class, which includes a physician, a surgeon, two geologists, three engineers, a senior manager for SpaceX and four test pilots.

Hines, a native of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, lives in Houston where he is a research pilot at Johnson Space Center. Hines is also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and received his master’s degree in aerospace engineering from UA in 2010.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
