Reddy Elected to ASM International Board of Trustees

By Natalie Crouse

Dr. Ramana Reddy, ACIPCO endowed professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, has been elected to the ASM International Board of Trustees.

“This is a great honor, and I am humbled to be elected as a trustee of the ASM International Board,” Reddy said. “ASM is one of the most vibrant and largest materials societies in the world…It has played a significant role in my professional growth and in providing opportunities to develop contacts with scientists and engineering professionals worldwide.”

Reddy has specialized in metallurgical and materials engineering for more than four decades, serving as a researcher, educator and active member of several professional societies. He has published hundreds of research articles and books, secured major research funding from federal agencies, and mentored more than 100 graduate students and visiting scholars. He has also delivered invited lectures in more than two dozen countries and helped organize national and international symposiums in his field.

He said those combined experiences in teaching, research and service contributed to his election to the board. “I love teaching students and collaborating with researchers from all over the world,” he said. “It has been a great honor to host the workshops and conferences on cutting-edge research for funding agencies and several professional societies, including ASM.”

In his new role, Reddy plans to help guide ASM’s efforts in professional development, membership engagement and access to technical resources. “I hope to actively participate in developing strategic initiatives which contribute to connecting materials professionals and promote professional development, membership, technical content and digital collection materials science data,” he said. He also noted that he would also like to strengthen ties between ASM and Alabama’s metal industries by supporting the transfer of emerging materials technologies.

Reddy added that mentoring the next generation of engineers remains one of the most meaningful parts of his work. He encouraged early-career engineers to get involved with ASM and take advantage of its educational and professional development opportunities. “I highly recommend that high school and early-career engineers and scientists take advantage of ASM’s educational opportunities to enhance their professional growth and develop contacts with materials engineering professionals worldwide,” he said.

Reddy’s election marks a significant milestone in his long career and reflects his continued dedication to advancing the field of materials engineering.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
