Dr. Bhupendra Khandelwal, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been elected as a fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS).
FRAeS is the highest level of distinction within the Royal Aeronautical Society, the world’s oldest and only professional body dedicated to aerospace, aviation and space communities. Fellows are nominated by existing fellows in recognition of outstanding contributions in an aerospace-related profession. Khandelwal’s appointment highlights his efforts in sustainable aviation fuels and combustion research.
“This honor reflects not only my research endeavors, but the exceptional work of my students, collaborators and the supportive environment at The University of Alabama,” said Khandelwal. “The Royal Aeronautical Society represents the pinnacle of professional achievement in aerospace, and I am deeply honored to join this distinguished community of innovators and leaders.”
While only a select group of individuals are chosen as fellows, the society maintains 25,000 global members spanning more than 100 countries.
Khandelwal leads research in combustion, emissions and performance of alternative fuel and works closely with the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA, Federal Aviation Administration, Siemens, Rolls-Royce and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense. He also serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals and the U.S. DOE.
Khandelwal joined UA in 2020 after spending several years at the University of Sheffield. In early 2025, Khandelwal advised a team of graduate students from the Engines and Combustion Laboratory that earned the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Aviation Award, placing second and receiving a $150,000 cash award. His team is also the 2025 recipient of the AIAA Terrestrial Energy Systems Best Student Paper Award. Khandelwal serves as chair of the AIAA Terrestrial Energy Systems Technical Committee and as associate editor of The Aeronautical Journal.
He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in advanced gas turbines, thermodynamics and gas turbine design. His efforts have been honored with the Styslinger College of Engineering’s Faculty Excellence in Professional Service Award.
