Dr. Sandy Pettit, associate dean for student success, was named Engineer of the Year at the 49th annual International Phosphate Fertilizer & Sulfuric Acid Technology Conference.
Hosted by the Central Florida Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, local members gathered June 5-6 in St. Pete Beach to discuss chemical process technology. Pettit presented educational courses entitled “Florida Laws & Rules” and “Professional Ethics,” which are required for professional engineer license renewal.
Pettit has remained an active member of the chapter for over 25 years, serving on the board for several terms. Her recognition as Engineer of the Year reflects her impact on the organization and its members through continued leadership and mentorship of the next generation of engineers.
“I am humbled and deeply appreciative of the recognition by my colleagues,” said Pettit. “I’m grateful to be part of such an inspiring cohort of professionals as the AIChE-CF community.”
Pettit first joined the chapter during her time at the University of South Florida, where she obtained three degrees and spent nearly 12 years as a signature research fellow, professor and associate chair for undergraduate studies. She earned numerous awards and recognition from the university, including the Academic Excellence Award, Outstanding Teaching Award, Distinguished Alumni Award and induction into the USF Academy of Distinguished Engineering Educators.
As an associate dean for the Styslinger College of Engineering, she focuses on enhancing student outcomes through strategic initiatives aimed at improving experiential learning, engagement and retention. Pettit brings an array of industry expertise to the role, having spent over 15 years in manufacturing, plant design and construction before joining academia.
