Dr. Hamid Moradkhani, Alton N. Scott Endowed Chair in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering and affiliate professor in the Department of Computer Science, has been elected as a 2027 fellow of the American Meteorological Society.
Election as a fellow recognizes one’s outstanding contributions to the advancement of atmospheric and related sciences and societal impact. Less than 0.2% of AMS members are appointed annually as fellows. Moradkhani will be presented with the award at the 107th AMS Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado.
Moradkhani joined the Lee J. Styslinger Jr. College of Engineering in 2018 as the founding director of the Center for Complex Hydrosystems Research. His interdisciplinary research focuses on predictive science across spatiotemporal scales while integrating climate science, water resource management and human dynamics to promote sustainability efforts. Before coming to UA, Moradkhani served as director of the Remote Sensing and Water Resources Lab and as a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Portland State University.
“I am honored and grateful to have been elected a fellow of the American Meteorological Society,” said Moradkhani. “Joining this distinguished group of scientists and professionals is both humbling and meaningful, and I sincerely appreciate this recognition for my contributions to hydrologic and atmospheric sciences.”
He has received over 25 awards throughout his career for industry, research and academic impact while authoring or co-authoring more than 240 peer-reviewed publications. Moradkhani is the first University of Alabama faculty member to be elected as a fellow of AMS.
