Co-ops give engineering students ‘real-world application’

By Associated Engineering Press

For students like Alexandra Andreen, a senior majoring in chemical engineering, the Cooperative Education Program, or co-op, provided her with distinct professional experience not offered by any other program. “I have seen myself develop both professionally and personally with each term,” Andreen said. “Now I feel significantly more prepared to be an engineer than I did when I started my co-op.”

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
