The consortium also includes personnel from the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Columbia University in New York, the University of North Carolina and the University of California-Irvine, as well as the Alabama Department of Public Health. Mark Elliott, a civil engineering professor at the University of Alabama, said the idea is to build systems that are sort of a hybrid between traditional septic systems and municipal sewer lines.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
