Momeni Appointed to Editorial Board of npj Computational Materials

By Natalie Crouse

Dr. Kasra Momeni, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has been appointed to the editorial board of npj Computational Materials, a peer-reviewed journal published by Nature Portfolio. The journal is one of the most respected in its field, dedicated to advancing computational approaches that drive innovation in materials science.

npj Computational Materials is known for publishing high-impact research that integrates theory, simulation and data-driven methods to understand and predict materials behavior. As the materials science community increasingly turns to computational tools to complement and guide experimental work, the journal has become a leading platform for disseminating interdisciplinary advances in fields ranging from energy storage to biomaterials.

Momeni began the editorial board term in January 2025. Appointments typically last three years, with the possibility of renewal. In this role, Momeni will contribute to shaping the journal’s strategic direction, participate in the peer review process, identify emerging trends in the field, and help recruit and curate impactful research articles.

“I am honored by this opportunity and grateful for the recognition,” Momeni said.

Serving on the editorial board is seen as both a professional milestone and a responsibility for Momeni. “Being selected reflects recognition from peers in the broader research community, and I see it as an opportunity to help shape the direction of scholarly communication in my area of expertise,” he said.

When asked what aspects of his background contributed to the appointment, Momeni pointed to his extensive interdisciplinary research at the intersection of materials science, mechanical engineering and computational modeling. “I believe my track record of high-quality publications, regular peer reviewing for high-impact journals, and active engagement in organizing conferences and symposiums played a key role,” Momeni said. “Additionally, my efforts to promote journal content and foster visibility for computational materials science on academic platforms may have further supported my selection.”

As part of the board, Momeni plans to advocate for research that bridges experimental and computational work, particularly in materials design and advanced manufacturing. Momeni’s goal as a member of the board is “to advocate for open, collaborative science and to help the journal attract high-quality, forward-looking research.”

This prestigious appointment follows Momeni’s receipt of the 2024 UA President’s Research Award, recognizing excellence in interdisciplinary research and innovation. Momeni expressed gratitude for the continued support of the UA community and looks forward to contributing to the advancement of computational materials science and to supporting the dissemination of impactful research.
