Dr. Tibor Szilvási
Sponsored by the President’s Office and the Office of the Provost, the newly established Capstone Catalyst Award celebrates The University of Alabama’s most distinguished faculty. This prestigious honor recognizes those who have obtained national or international distinction for their exceptional accomplishments within the three most recent academic years.
Among this year’s inaugural recipients is Dr. Tibor Szilvási, assistant professor and graduate program coordinator in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.
Szilvási’s research centers around catalytic reactions and their potential improvements, materials and role in complex interface design. At the core of his research, he aims to develop and translate fundamental scientific understanding into practical technologies that improve everyday life.
The Capstone Catalyst Program highlights prestige and impact brought to UA while incentivizing innovation and academic leadership across all disciplines.
“Dr. Szilvási is a true catalyst for change. His research embodies the ideal of engineering: taking complex ideas and transforming them into solutions that genuinely improve everyday life, which is what this award celebrates,” said Dr. John Kim, interim head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. “His recognition as a Capstone Catalyst is a testament to the innovative spirit thriving in our department.”
Achieving this level of distinction requires years of persistence. For Szilvási, the greatest challenge has been balancing long-term goals with immediate responsibilities, both essential to faculty life. Reflecting on that journey, he offered advice for the next generation of scholars.
“Focus on problems that genuinely matter to you, because passion is what sustains long-term effort when results don’t come quickly. At the same time, seek out mentors and collaborators who challenge your thinking and expand your perspective. Finally, be intentional about communicating your ideas clearly, because even the best research only makes an impact if others can understand and build on it,” Szilvási said.
Up to 10 UA faculty will receive the Capstone Catalyst Award annually.
