Transferring from The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Charles Monroe has joined The University of Alabama’s College of Engineering as an associate professor in metallurgical engineering.
Monroe’s research revolves heavily around metals, working with metal casting, metal materials and metal manufacturing.
“Metal casting is one of the oldest manufacturing methods and has a long history with artists, scientific experts and patrons. All the latest manufacturing techniques, including 3D printing, still use knowledge and skill of prior methods, and the best practice usually strengthens both old and new processes,” Monroe said.
Metal casting has been used for thousands of years, he said, and still has many uses today in metalworking. Monroe enjoys the entire process.
“I get excited to participate in the whole experience from computer modeling to seeing the final real part being installed and used in the wild,” he said.
Monroe received his doctorate from the University of Iowa in mechanical engineering. Prior to joining UA, he taught collected research at UAB.
“UA has a great reputation in the metallurgical and metal casting field with many excellent alumni in the industry,” Monroe said. “I am looking forward to working with my colleagues, students, alumni and industry to lead the way.”
Monroe is involved in the metal casting industry in the American Foundry Society, or AFS. He works with a group of UA students who are involved with the student chapter of AFS and attend national metal casting competitions.
“I am a board member of the local Birmingham Chapter of AFS as well as on multiple technical committees,” Monroe said. “I have assisted with the outreach in the ‘Foundry in the Box’ program on a regular basis and support undergraduate and graduate students to participate.”
Monroe has federal and industry funding. The Defense Logistics Agency is a big supporter.
