The auto industry is still trying to process the effect of yesterday’s planned layoffs by GM … There are some dangers though. Bharat Balasubramanian, a professor of mechanical engineering and electrical and computer engineering at the University of Alabama, said the strategy could prove dangerous if fuel prices increase or autonomous technology outpaces pickup trucks. Balasubramanian was formerly vice president of group research and advanced engineering at Mercedes-Benz.
In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,200 students and more than 170 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
