Wang’s Lab Receives Global Interest During 2025 GCCA Innovandi Open Challenge

Dr. Jialai Wang, professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering, and his research team were recognized at the 2025 Global Cement and Concrete Association Innovandi Open Challenge for their research project titled “High-Reactive Supplementary Cementitious Materials Derived from Recycled Concrete.”

Finch Selected as Spring 2025 Outstanding Co-op Student

Henry Finch, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering, was selected as the spring 2025 Outstanding Co-op Student by the Engineering Career Development Center. Finch is currently completing his third and final term with Lavender, Inc. in Aliceville, Alabama, where he has served as a project manager co-op within the engineering and project management teams.

Song Showcases Underwater Robotics Technologies for USGS FLOW Academy

Dr. Aijun Song, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and his research team successfully conducted multiple field demonstrations of underwater autonomous vehicles as next-generation water-observing technologies at the Black Warrior River and Lake Tuscaloosa. These demonstrations were part of the 2025 U.S. Geological Survey FLOW Academy.

3 Engineering Faculty Members Receive DARPA MTO Award

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has presented the Microsystems Technology Office Award to three faculty members from the College of Engineering. Drs. A.B.M. Tahidul Haque and Sree Kalyan Patiballa, assistant professors in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Dr. Shreyas Rao, associate professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, were recognized at the agency’s Spark Tank event, held July 24-25 in Aurora, Colorado.

College of Engineering, College of Education Faculty Partner to Host Code-N-Sensor Future Lab Camp

Seventy fourth- through sixth-grade students from Tuscaloosa County attended the inaugural Code-N-Sensor Future Lab camp at The University of Alabama, where they participated in a week of hands-on activities focused on physiological computing.

In 2024, the U.S. declared a major natural disaster an average of nearly every four days, according to an analysis by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). UA Safe State Partners with OSHA for Heat Awareness Week Outreach

UA Safe State participated in the H2OSHA outreach campaign hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Birmingham Regional Office for Heat Awareness Week from June 24-26. The outreach campaign sought to teach employers how to protect their workers from heat-related illnesses.

Innovators from 9 U.S. States, 4 Countries Win Phase 1 of NASA’s LunaRecycle Challenge

LunaRecycle, a NASA Centennial Challenge, launched in September 2024 to crowdsource solutions for recycling non-metabolic materials on space exploration missions. The competition focuses on the design, development and demonstration of solutions that can reduce trash accumulation on longer-term missions to the moon, Mars and beyond.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,800 students and more than 150 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
