In 2024, the U.S. declared a major natural disaster an average of nearly every four days, according to an analysis by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). From wildfires to hurricanes to flash floods, the pace and severity of climate-related events is accelerating, putting millions of homes at risk.

UA Safe State participated in the H2OSHA outreach campaign hosted by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Birmingham Regional Office for Heat Awareness Week from June 24-26. The outreach campaign sought to teach employers how to protect their workers from heat-related illnesses.

LunaRecycle, a NASA Centennial Challenge, launched in September 2024 to crowdsource solutions for recycling non-metabolic materials on space exploration missions. The competition focuses on the design, development and demonstration of solutions that can reduce trash accumulation on longer-term missions to the moon, Mars and beyond.

Two University of Alabama students in the College of Engineering have been selected as 2025-2026 Shelby Scholars. Juniors Javen Bies-Dupree, of Birmingham, and Elizabeth Owens, of Pensacola, Florida, will join 38 other UA students in the class. The Shelby Scholars program is a credit-bearing leadership program for undergraduate students from any academic field who are passionate about public service.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,800 students and more than 150 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
