Two University of Alabama students in the College of Engineering have been selected as 2025-2026 Shelby Scholars. Juniors Javen Bies-Dupree, of Birmingham, and Elizabeth Owens, of Pensacola, Florida, will join 38 other UA students in the class. The Shelby Scholars program is a credit-bearing leadership program for undergraduate students from any academic field who are passionate about public service.

Dr. Seongsin “Margaret” Kim, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected as an Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide Fellow. Kim joins a prestigious group of 121 members from 27 countries in the 2025 class.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s College of Engineering has more than 5,800 students and more than 150 faculty. In recent years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater, Hollings, Portz, Boren, Mitchell and Truman scholars.
